Synthetic Horizon

This project began with a survey of the site. By making a synthetic horizon with string lines, set by transit, various parts of the site could be seen relative to one another. In making drawings of the strings and their associated land features a grain was recognized in the land; Natural north-south lines of sandstone carved by tongues of retreating glacial ice. Three strategic sections were made running with the grain and three crossing the grain, illuminating the anatomy of each distinct niche-like space on the site.
