Most people in and around the village of Gunjur do not swim, including the hundreds of fisherman who reside here either temporarily or permanently. The flotation device project is intended to reduce the number of drownings and exemplify a potential local industry. One device is a simple vest containing empty, discarded plastic water bottles. Another is a long, thin tubular net also containing empty water bottles. The "tubular" version, which was tested with the most success, can be used by the full crew of a large fishing boat and is easily stored, out of the way, around the boat's gunnel. A third method also designed and fabricated in Gunjur is a wrap with handles that uses fuel containers, already aboard, for flotation.
